A truly poignant early Victorian mourning ring, created to commemorate the passing of Basil. Filled with sentiment and unusual in design, this is a beautiful example of the deeply personal jewellery created during the Victorian era to remember those who had passed.
The back of the broad gold band has been hand engraved with the individual letters of “Basil”, allowing the name of the person being remembered to remain proudly visible. Often the name or details of the deceased were concealed within the interior of a mourning jewel, so it is particularly touching to see Basil’s name celebrated across the outside of the ring.
The top of the ring takes the form of a wide buckle, a long established sentimental motif representing love, devotion and an unbroken bond. But the most poignant detail is hidden beneath it. The buckle lifts to reveal a plaited lock of hair, carefully preserved within the ring.
The entire ring has been crafted in rich, buttery 18 carat gold, suggesting a jewel of higher status that would likely have been specially commissioned by a person of means following the loss of their loved one.
