An exceptional early Georgian mourning ring, dating to the early 1700s and created in high carat gold. This is a hugely sentimental ring of the period, powerful in both symbolism and presence.
At the centre sits a step cut, colourless crystal panel, beneath which is a depiction of a skull. A potent memento mori motif reminding the wearer of mortality and the transience of life. With age, the skull has softly darkened and is now subtly visible, adding to the ring’s haunting and evocative character. Flanking the central panel to either side are hand cut diamonds, their gentle sparkle providing contrast and balance to the sombre imagery.
The band is fully enamelled and bears the moving inscription “she rejoices in glory,” a phrase reflecting early 18th century beliefs in salvation and the soul’s triumph beyond death. Stuart crystal rings such as this were created to honour the deceased while offering comfort to the living through faith and remembrance.
A rare and museum worthy survivor. Deeply symbolic, historically important, and a powerful example of early Georgian mourning jewellery at its most meaningful.
