A rather special Victorian mourning ring, rich in symbolism and accompanied by a remarkable history that brings us closer to the life of the man it commemorates, Daniel.

Created in 18 carat gold, the ring features a broad wavy band, delicately decorated with pale blue enamel and the motto ‘IN MEMORY OF’. At its centre sits a blue cabochon sapphire, framed by a charming floral setting, perhaps inspired by the forget-me-not. A particularly unusual detail is the moss agate set to the side, adding another layer of uniqueness to this unusual design.

Inside, the ring is its original dedication: ‘Daniel Everard died 23rd Jan 1835 aged 84’. Through historical records, including land documents and wills, we have been able to uncover something of Daniel’s life. He came from a prosperous family of merchants and bankers in King’s Lynn and served as Rector of Stanhoe for an extraordinary sixty years. Records also reveal him as a landowner with a household of servants, several of whom he remembered in his will.

Daniel left behind two daughters, Caroline and Grace, and it seems likely that his wife had already passed. The ring may therefore have been commissioned by one of his daughters in his memory. Its carefully considered design and substantial gold band even leave open the possibility that it formed part of a matching pair. One for each daughter.

More than a beautiful piece of antique jewellery, this is a tangible connection to a life lived almost three centuries ago. A personal memorial that has survived with its inscription, symbolism and history intact.
