Antique Victorian Sardonyx Urn Mourning Ring in 9 Carat Gold

A poignant and characterful Victorian mourning ring, rich in symbolism and history.

Created in 9 carat gold, the ring features a striking sardonyx panel to the top, finely carved with an urn motif. The urn was a deeply significant symbol in 19th century mourning jewellery, representing remembrance and eternal rest. It is a sought after and less commonly seen motif, making this piece particularly special.

The band itself once carried a full enamel inscription, now reading “Memory.” It is likely that the original phrase would have been “In Memory,” with the loss of all the enamel occurring over time. This change, along with visible historic resizing and repair, speaks to a life well lived. A ring that has been worn, cherished, and worn through many generations.

Adding a particularly darling and unusual touch, the inside of the band has been faintly engraved with the words “Froggie 7th Nov,” offering a glimpse into a personal story now lost to time, yet no less endearing.

These signs of wear do not detract but instead add to the ring’s story. They reflect its role as a deeply personal and sentimental object. With its carved sardonyx, symbolic motif, and traces of its long history, this is a beautiful piece of Victorian mourning jewellery, full of meaning.

CONDITION: the ring is in fair antique condition. The band has been historical repaired with the band being cut and repaired during its life. This is clearly well loved
