A remarkable and utterly charming early Victorian brooch. Designed in the form of a delightful little turtle which is a rare and whimsical subject in antique jewellery.

The turtle’s domed shell is formed from a large cabochon garnet of rich, glowing hue, set within a mount of minimum 9 carat gold. The warmth of which adds to the depth of the design. Emerging from beneath, the head and legs are created in silver and intricately set with hand cut rose diamonds, a traditional technique used to enhance the brilliance of the stones in the candlelit world of the 19th century. The tiny eyes are picked out with smaller red garnets, bringing the creature vividly to life.

What truly sets this piece apart is its personality. The turtle’s sweet expression and gentle smile give it an endearing, almost storybook quality. Animal jewels were often imbued with symbolism, and turtles in particular represented longevity and protection making this not only decorative but meaningful too.

A very rare and enchanting Victorian jewel, full of character, craftsmanship, and warmth. A true collector’s piece that feels as joyful and distinctive today as when it was created over 170 years ago.
