A jewel steeped in love, memory, and over two centuries of history, this exquisite Georgian mourning ring is a deeply moving testament to devotion. Created in 1812 to commemorate the passing of Sarah Scrutton, it embodies the tender sentiment as well as exquisite craftsmanship that define the mourning jewels of the era.
At its centre lies a delicate locket beneath a softly domed rock crystal, within which rests a lock of Sarah’s hair. A cherished fragment of a life once held dear, kept close to those left behind. Encircling this poignant centrepiece is a luminous halo of white pearls, their soft lustre symbolising tears shed for a loved one. Each tiny pearl speaks of remembrance, love, and the enduring bond between the departed and those who mourned them. As can be seen in pictures a few of the very tiny seed pearls have been lost, however this is hard to see when worn.
Turning the band reveals an engraved dedication, recording Sarah’s passing on the 16th of December 1812, aged 56. A personal detail that transforms this jewel from a ring into a tangible piece of family history. The shoulders, adorned with elegant open gold work so characteristic of the period, create a beautifully sculpted silhouette, while the original shank remains intact. A rare and precious survival in jewels of this age.
Crafted in 9 carat rose gold, the ring’s warm tones complement the soft white pearls and the ethereal crystal window, creating a harmony of materials as thoughtful as the sentiment behind them. Minor signs of wear, such as the tiniest missing join in one shoulder, serve only to remind us of its long journey through time and the generations who once held it dear.
More than a jewel, this is a piece of love immortalised in gold and pearl. A deeply human relic of remembrance from the Georgian era, and a profoundly beautiful addition to any antique jewellery lovers collection.
